Access to the engine compartment and associated components is an often overlooked detail in vehicle design, but one that can have a considerable impact on maintenance. If things are difficult to get to for maintenance either down time for maintenance increases or items get overlooked until they fail.
Because railcar moving operations place heavy demands on equipment ease of routine maintenance is imperative. With this in mind the Shuttlewagon's engine compartment was designed for either side access through four large removable hood side panels, two on each side. The panels are completely removable to eliminate interference. All maintainable items are within arm's reach from the deck. No special facility or intricate disassembly of interfering parts is required, making daily and weekly inspections quick and easy.
